Release Notes – 7 May 2025
Display Enhancements
- We’ve enhanced the image and table display in articles (including datasheets and factsheets): Figures can now be fully enlarged with a single click, and both Figures and Tables can be quickly flicked through, providing a smoother and more intuitive viewing experience.
- We’ve introduced key accessibility improvements across the platform to deliver a more inclusive experience for all users, aligning with the WCAG 2.2 AA standards.
Release Notes – 9 Apr 2025
Access Improvements
- Seamless Login for Proxied Users: The issue where proxy users were unable to log into CABI Digital Library via their account has been resolved.
Display Enhancements
- Shopping Cart Field Updates: The Address, City/Town, and Postcode fields in the Billing section of the shopping cart are now optional by default, deleting non-mandatory elements and therefore streamlining the form for a smoother experience.
- ePUB Printing Enhancements: We’ve made several updates to improve printing of ePUB articles (a type of digital publication). These changes include clearer printing options and removing confusing elements. Unlike PDF files, which have numbered pages, ePUB files are made up of individual parts, called "nodes," such as HTML documents, images, and other content components. This update makes printing ePUB files easier to understand.
- eReader Improved Accessibility: We’ve made significant improvements to the eReader, which is the tool used to view digital content. These changes include better colour contrast, improved navigation for people using screen readers, and the addition of a "Skip to content" button for quicker navigation, especially for users who rely on keyboard shortcuts.
Release Notes – 4 Mar 2025
Search Enhancements
- Browse Books: When filtering results by "Book Type" on the Browse Books page, the facet now correctly displays in the applied filters. This resolves a recent issue where book type labels were not appearing when filters were applied.
Display Improvements
- Enhanced colour contrast and focus accessibility in Atypon eReader: Radio buttons, checkboxes, toggles, status icons, list items, and input fields have been updated to meet WCAG colour contrast and focus accessibility standards, providing a more inclusive and user-friendly experience.
Release Notes – 4 Feb 2025
Search
- Changes in XML taxonomy tags. Updated taxonomy tags in XML are now reflected in search results. This resolves the issue where abstract records with updated tags weren’t appearing.
- Improved refine facets. We've enhanced the refine facets on the left side of the search results page. Now you can filter searches using 'Refine' (AND) or 'Exclude' (NOT) with the new buttons.
- Facet sorting fixed. Alphabetical sorting at the third level of hierarchical facets is now working properly. The number in brackets next to the 'More' label is also displayed correctly.
- Immediate search within products (Advanced Search). You can now search across multiple products at once by using the ‘Search in Product’ filter in Advanced Search.
Display
- Improvements to ‘Materials’ section in the eReader. If a publication is missing figures, tables, media files, or supplements, you’ll now see a message in the 'Materials' section. This section has also received updates such as a toggle description panel, a scrollbar for long descriptions, and an updated font for descriptions.
- eReader accessibility updates. We've made various improvements to colour contrast, screen reader compatibility, and keyboard navigation to meet WCAG 2.2 standards.
- Correct language labels for less common languages. Labels for less widely spoken languages now display the full language name, not the ISO 639 code. For example, ‘Buli (Ghana)’ now appears instead of ‘bwu’.
- Ampersands correctly encoded in publisher names. When searching for publications from publishers with ampersands in their name (e.g., Taylor & Francis), ampersands are now correctly encoded.
- ‘Abstract record’ label in Global Agricultural Research Archive. The multi-search widget on the homepage of the Global Agricultural Research Archive now correctly labels abstracts as ‘Abstract record’ instead of ‘Database Publication Item’.
- ‘Create PDF from project’ works in 'My Account'. The recent bug preventing PDFs from being generated after clicking ‘Create PDF from project’ has been fixed.
Release Notes – 3 Dec 2024
Search
- Contributors’ names included in citations. This fixes an issue that prevented authors included marked as contributors from being included in the exported citation files (single record, selected records, bulk export).
- Improved refine facets. The refine facets in the left pane of the search results page now include up to 100 filters which can be sorted numerically and alphabetically.
Display
- Labels corrected in the search facet. In the search facet, we now have the correct labels for some article types, i.e., 'Withdrawal', 'Correction', and ‘Evidence and Gap Map’.
- Labels for article types "Research method and protocol" and "Evidence and gap map" are available.
- A redirect issue for EZProxy users has been solved.
- Improved account log in protection to comply with PCI 4.0 requirements. User accounts are now temporarily locked after 5 failed login attempts. Users are prevented from attempting to log in again for 15 minutes. However, they can still log in through other methods such as CONNECT or SAML during the lockout period.
Release Notes – 13 Nov 2024
Search
- Search using the compound field "indexingterm". When searching across CDL using the compound field "indexingterm" it is recommended again that phrases are placed in quotes for exact matching, e.g. "spodoptera exigua" instead of spodoptera exigua. See the complete instructions on how to search by field tag at this link.
Display
- File names of downloaded PDFs for CABI-hosted full text (abstract records) are correct. This fixes a bug that showed extraneous names for the downloaded PDFs.
- First 90 days added to article metrics graphs. The Literatum display metrics have been configured so the Article Metrics widget also displays the first 90 days after the article publication date in addition to the already existing Total and Last 6 months.
- Message if search results go beyond 2,000. If there are more than 2,000 search results, now a message shows indicating that the number of displayed records is limited to 2,000.
- Display of search string distorted. This fixes a recent bug that changed the display and font of Search strings in searchRxiv, resulting in the text running off the page.
- Enhanced security with single-use activation links for institutional administrator. The activation link in the Institution Activation and Subscription Institution Verification emails is unique to each recipient and expires after one hour by default. This change enhances security, protects user privacy, and encourages prompt user action, contributing to a safer and more efficient account activation process.
Release Notes – 8 Oct 2024
Search
- When you perform a search, the results are automatically sorted by Date instead of Relevance. This is to make sure you see most recent information at the top of the list of results when you do a search. Using the sort options you can easily switch to 'relevancy' or 'alphabetical' sorting.
- When you combine a long query with the date range filter, it is handled correctly as a long search. This was not always the case due to a bug which changed the number of results when the page was refreshed.
Display
- Improved layout of Search Alerts. Search alert emails have now a more user-friendly layout, set up in HTML as default to allow users to click links to records directly.
- Search tabs display improved. All search tabs are now displayed to the user, even if there are 0 results. This addresses some issues when the default tab had 0 results, users can now more easily switch to tabs with results.
- Book availability status now displayed. There are 4 statuses: Not yet published, Published, Replaced by new edition, Out of print. This will make it clear to readers if a book is still forthcoming or already available.
- Improved the display of year-volume-issue information in Table of Contents and individual content pages.
Release Notes – 1 Oct 2024

Release Notes – 11 Sep 2024
Search
- Number of citations included in bulk export coincides with the number of results. This was not always valid due to an error that created duplicates in exports. It is now fixed.
Display
- The elocator ID – which replaces the page range number – now shows on CABI Digital Library whenever available.
Example, /doi/10.1079/onehealthcases.2024.0028
Release Notes – 14 Aug 2024
Search
- Truncation of the search header when it's longer than 4 lines. When you run a long search, the search header (i.e., the search query showing in the search results page under the number of results found) is longer than 4 lines. This made the actual results shift down the page compromising the experience. This has now been improved by truncating search headers longer than 4 lines.
- The title field is working as expected. After the 22 July minor release, there was a regression affecting the title field in that it might have given zero results when applied. Now it works as expected again.
- A tooltip has been added to the icons used to run, save, delete searches in Recent and Saved Searches. This enhancement makes even clearer what the icons are used for. See this example of the tooltip Run Search showing when you click on the magnifying glass under Saved Searches.
- Search results. The fields year and references are now displayed in search results for all abstract records.
- Search function. The option to search by country and location of publisher has now been applied also to abstract records created before 2013 (in Advanced search and using field tags) (this functionality was already in place for all records created since 2013.)
Display
- Improved display of the search tabs. The new display has a light grey background that makes the tabs stand up more against the background, and includes the number of results found for each tab.
- Abstract search results don't display the View button when a GetFTR button is present to avoid duplication.
- CC0 license symbol is displayed. See this example /doi/10.31220/agriRxiv.2023.00175
- Font Selection for EPUB Publications in eReader. When you’re reading an EPUB via the eReader, you can now choose the font that suits your reading preferences, using the new dropdown list with the seven new available fonts.
- Purchase confirmation email is updated. The email confirming your purchase has replaced Marston with Wiley to reflect our vendor change and has benefited of other small tweaks to make shipping timelines more understandable.
Release Notes – 22 Jul 2024
Search- Issues associated to editing long searches are resolved. This fixes an issue where Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) were swapped around when more than nine terms – separated by Boolean operators – were included in the search query. Want to know more about how to use Boolean operators? Have a look at this page of the Help file.
- Results of long searches now display when they are sorted by date. This fixes a bug which prevented results from showing in the search result page after results were sorted by date.
Display
- CAB Abstracts lookup link is now available in CABI Compendium. Following the improvement of having CAB Abstracts lookup links under the references in journal articles, case studies and book chapters following the May release (see related notes below), users can now find the ‘CAB Abstracts’ links in datasheets as well.
- The GetFTR button display has improved. The GetFTR button now does not display when there already is a 'Free full text' or 'PDF' button. Having just the necessary buttons will avoid confusion with multiple options to choose from.
- Languages display correctly in the left pane of the search results. This makes it clearer which languages are referred to on CABI Digital Library. So, for example, Greek, Modern (1453?) has been replaced by the simpler Greek, or the cryptic code sh now shows as Serbo-Croatian. Other variants of similar languages have been reduced to the use of the dominant language. Therefore, the complex block Limburgish; Limburger; Limburgan is now easily represented by the label Limburgish.
- Expired licenses do not display in Access Entitlements anymore. The list of licenses for subscribed content is therefore neater and clearer. As a reminder, you can access your Access Entitlements from the My Accounts page once you are logged into CABI Digital Library.
- Improved display of eReader snackbar messages. With this release, a snackbar message (i.e., a message informing user of a process that an app has performed or will perform) automatically disappears when a new one is triggered, providing a clearer and more user-friendly notification experience.
- The display of related content on the book pages has been improved. Related content on the book pages now shows as a list of publications with title, publication type and date, instead of a group of maximum four rectangles with title and full author list. This change makes the design much neater than it was before.
We have also improved the way you can navigate CABI Digital Library site. We have added a ‘Go back’ button at the top of each record (whether abstract record or primary content) which brings you back to the page you were visiting before. This makes navigating our site even smoother, especially when you click on a record from the search result page, and now you are able to go back to the same result page you were before.
Release Notes – 11 Jun 2024
Search
- Enhanced replicability of searches. When a search is performed on CABI Digital Library, the search header of the search results page now has curved brackets instead of squared ones. This formatting change guarantees that you can easily copy and paste the search query and replicate it on CABI Digital Library or in any other database.
- Language of Text filter now gives expected results. This fixes a bug whereby using the Language of Text filter (la:) did not yield expected number of results. Reindexing is in progress to have all languages appear correctly and we expect this to be completed by the end of next month.
- Quick searches by specific year range filters are available. Buttons to narrow down searches to specific year ranges (last 5 years, last year, this year) are added to the left pane of the search result page of abstract records under Publication Year. For more information on how the filters work, follow this page.
- Proximity operator is displayed in search header of the search results page. This ensures proximity search queries in the search header of the search results page match what’s entered in the search box. Again, this is crucial for an improved replicability of the searches. To know more about proximity searches, you can visit this page.
- Truncation now works with Title field in Advanced Search. To know more about truncation, have a look at the Help file.
Citation exports
- The abstract in the export citation file now always matches that of the record. This fixes a bug when users exported citations for case studies and Plantwise Knowledge Bank factsheets – the abstract in the export citation files did not match that of the record, but it usually coincided with the caption of the first figure, or it just included the word 'CABI'.
- Bulk citation export (CSV + Citation Only) now works correctly when applying the Creation Date filter. When the Creation Date filter was applied in Advanced Search, it interfered with the export. This is now fixed.
Other
- Increased discoverability of CABI Digital Library product landing pages via Google. We have made changes to the metatags in product landing pages to ensure these are ranked higher in Google.
- Whenever present, the e-location ID of an abstract record is now displayed as part of the source information on the individual abstract page.
- Coherent display of abstracts on CABI Digital Library. Following recent removal of the green/Open Access padlocks for abstract records in the search results pages and in My Projects folders (cf. Notes in April and May release notes in this page), we have adopted the same change on the individual abstract pages.
- Source Publication Titles are capitalised. When you are in the search results pages under the Abstract records tab, you will see that Source Publication Titles in the left pane have now each word capitalised.
- E-reader enhancements. The tips that display while eReader is loading publications for viewing have been improved to be more descriptive. Also, eReader now shows default cover images for publications without their own covers to help you identify publications lacking a cover image and to provide a consistent view in the Details section and offline library.
What’s more, we have made further changes to searches on CABI Digital Library in response to your feedback.
- Advanced search will stay within the same database and a new tooltip explaining the behaviour is added. When clicking Advanced Search from a database product landing page, the filter for that specific database is now automatically applied.
- Full Text and CABI-curated search filters are improved. The Full Text filter is now a separate filter with clearer labelling and positioned in a more prominent place in the left pane of the search results page (for abstract records only). The search profiles for Grey Literature and Evidence Based Research now have a clearer heading. Check more details on how the filters work at this link
Release Notes – 15 May 2024
Access
- GetFTR functionality is available. You can find GetFTR buttons in the Search result pages (for abstract records only). GetFTR buttons flag if you are entitled to read a full research article or book chapter. By checking permissions directly with the publisher at the point of discovery and facilitating access directly to the article or book chapter you want to read, GetFTR makes it easier to access and discover content. Here is a short video explaining how it works.
- Access to databases and CABI Compendium is displayed under Access Entitlements. If you have a license to any CABI database and to CABI Compendium, you can verify your access when you go to this page. The page offers details on access coverage and expiration date for these products.
- CAB Abstracts lookup link. Under the references in journal articles, case studies and book chapters, you can find a ‘CAB Abstracts’ link. This provides a handy lookup of that reference in the CAB Abstracts database.
- My Projects page – Padlock adjustments. Following recent changes in the Search Results page (see Release Notes from 7 Apr), we have applied the same padlock adjustments in the My Projects page for consistency.
Search
- Recent searches now display long searches too. Searches of >2,000 characters are now also displayed under the Recent Searches tab of the Advanced search page.
- Recent searches can be saved directly without having to be run. You are now able to easily save your recent searches without having to run them again first. You can do it by accessing the Recent Searches tab under Advanced Search and clicking on the Save Searches icon.
- Recent searches display up to 100 searches. The latest 100 searches are now showing in the Advanced Search page under the Recent Searches tab.
- Specific latest searches can be deleted. You can delete specific searches among the latest 100 you have performed within their last session. To do that, you simply need to click on the bin icon which shows in correspondence of the search you want to delete.
- Number of latest searches are displayed in recent and saved searches tabs. The tabs Recent Searches and Saved Searches in the Advanced search page now display the number of latest searches run.
- Combining small searches into one long search. It is now possible to combine multiple smaller searches into a long search (>2,000 characters) via Recent or Saved Searches. Now, the desired results are yielded in a few seconds.
- All refinements applied to a search are kept when the search is edited. All refinements under ‘Limit to’ in the left pane of the Search Results page (i.e., Grey Literature, Evidence Based Research, Open Access available, Full text available; see this page of the Search Help book for a comprehensive description) always show when the search is edited. That way, you do not have to re-add already applied filters.
- Source Publication Title facet is added to databases. If you have access to CABI Databases, you can apply the Source Publication Title facet to narrow down search results based on the source publication title (DO being the corresponding field tag; cf. this page of the Search Help book for a full list of field tags). This is also a useful way to see where search results are published.
- Hit-term highlighting is now enabled in search results for queries <2,000 characters. This will allow you to quickly see why a result was included for your search query to help check the validity of your search queries. Therefore, it can help to build better searches.
Other
- Preview PDF. We have added a Preview PDF for the most recent books that includes the cover, front page, and the first chapter of the book. The content provided by the Preview PDF is available to anyone and the button to access it is found under the title of the book on the individual book page.
Release Notes – 7 Apr 2024
- Citation export improvements. We’ve enhanced the way exported citations are formatted so: the author's name format is now 'last name, first name’s initials' and corporate authors are always present.
- 'Copy to clipboard’ feature in SearchRxiv. Now users can easily copy and paste search strings of SearchRxiv Search String articles in other databases for comparison simply by clicking on the orange button 'Copy to clipboard’.
- Clicking plus in filter opens underlying options. This is visible in the left pane of all search result pages, e.g., /action/doSearch?AllField=*%3A*, and it improves the old behaviour when the page refreshed each time users clicked on the plus (+) symbol.
- Search Results page - Padlock adjustments. We’ve improved the way abstract records display in the Search pages based on users' feedback. Abstract records are now accompanied by padlocks (marked as closed and red) only when they are not accessible by users, either because users are not logged in or because they do not have a license for that specific content; in all other cases, abstract records are not accompanied by any padlock. The green padlocks have been removed because they gave the impression that the user has access to the full text, which is only the case for full text hosted by CABI and Open Access content (or in case the institution subscribes to the full text hosted by the publisher, which the user can check via link resolvers).
- Search Results page - Share via email. Users can now email search results to colleagues just by clicking on the ‘Share via Email’ button showing when they select a record in the search results page. This fixes a bug that prevented the selected publication to show in the email.
- Author names available for all articles and cases. Author names are now present on the homepage of all journals and cases fixing a very recent bug.
Release Notes – 10 Mar 2024
- Citation exports have improved formatting. We’ve improved the way exported citations are formatted, so importing in citation tools is now even more accurate.
- Bulk export is now behind log in. Users can export up to 100,000 citations in one go by simply logging in.
- Publication year facet. We’ve temporarily hidden the Publication year facet in the left pane of the Search results pages as it did not yield the desired results. We are making sure it works super smoothly for our users and we will add it back shortly as soon as the improvements are incorporated.
- Improved popup message for info toggle button in eReader. The message that pops up when users hover over the top button of the eReader sidebar menu bar to expand or collapse has been improved to reflect the status of the sidebar menu.
- Phone number field. The phone number field is now available as an optional element in the Shopping Cart page. This way customers can benefit from track and trace for their ecommerce orders.
- Turkey renamed to Türkiye. Following the UN decision, Turkey has been renamed to Türkiye.
Release Notes – 12 Feb 2024
- Bulk export of search results. Bulk exports are now even more comprehensive and accurate than before: all expected records are included, there are no garbled page numbers, all PANs display, and if requested the full abstract shows too.
- Access entitlements. Users who go to their Access Entitlements page can now see their journal and book subscriptions instantaneously under the Access Entitlements of their institutional account.
- VAT changes. All European customers will now be charged VAT upon purchase.
Release Notes – 31 Jan 2024
- Abstract records migration complete and decommissioning of CAB Direct. As of 31st January, the migration of records from CAB Direct to CABI Digital Library is fully complete. All of CABI's publishing resources are now available on CABI Digital Library. CAB Direct and collection sites have been switched off and all users have been automatically redirected to CABI Digital Library for uninterrupted access. To know more about this huge milestone, please visit this page.
Release Notes – 9 Jan 2024
- Bulk export of search results. Users are now able to export up to 100,000 results of executed searches in one go instead of 1000 at a time as it was in CAB Direct.
- OpenURL link resolvers visible in A&I records. It is now possible to find link resolvers not only in the search results page of abstract content, but also on the page of each abstract record. Users will find it very useful as they can now go through to the full text in their library systems directly via these link resolvers.
- Recent searches. Details about the search query that were available to Saved searches are now found in Recent searches as well.
- Saved searches. Saved searches now display 100 searches instead of 10.
- Saved search alerts. Content published up to 2 years ago is now included in Saved Search alerts so that users can find many more sources for their searches.
- Book page improvements. The individual book pages have a new, neater design which makes it straightforward for users to know if they have access to the full books and which access options they have. Book pages are also enriched with clearer purchase options.
- CONNECT. CONNECT single sign-on option has been enhanced with four new features: reducing the form fields to a single input field upon registration of a new account; a simpler and more user-friendly profile viewing and management; use of passkeys as possible alternatives to passwords (learn more here); a new user profile security feature now requires users to re-authenticate when initiating profile changes with potential security implications, such as managing their password or email address.
