Salmonella and the host in the battle for iron.

Abstract

This chapter focuses on the mechanisms by which the pathogen Salmonella acquires iron during infection. Topics covered include: mammalian iron metabolism and its regulation; regulation of iron uptake systems; role of iron uptake during Salmonella infection; lipocalin-2 and iron withholding responses.
