Managing outdoor recreation: case studies in the National Parks

Robert Manning is a Professor in the Parks, Recreation and Tourism Program at the University of Vermont where he is also Director of the university's Park Studies Laboratory. He teaches and conducts research on the history, philosophy and management of parks, wilderness and related areas. He has conducted a long-term program of research for the US National Park Service and other park and outdoor recreation agencies, and has spent four year-long sabbatical leaves with the National Park Service. He is the author of over a hundred journal articles and several books, including 'Studies in Outdoor Recreation: Search and Research for Satisfaction (Third Edition)' (Oregon State University Press), 'Parks and People: Managing Outdoor Recreation at Acadia National Park' (University Press of New England), and 'Parks and Carrying Capacity: Commons without Tragedy' (Island Press). He has received a number of awards, including being named a University Scholar (University of Vermont), the Social Science Achievement Award (George Wright Society), the Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Research (National Recreation and Park Association), the George V. Kidder Outstanding Faculty Award (University of Vermont), the Louis F. Twardzik Outstanding Alumni Award (Michigan State University) and the National Literary Award (National Recreation and Park Association).
