Tourism development and destination community residents.

Abstract

This chapter presents an overview of the positive and negative impacts of tourism, the factors that affect the intensity and direction of tourism impacts, and the predictors of resident attitudes towards destination development. Suggestions are presented for gaining community support to tourism, and the Punta Cana Resort and Club in the Dominican Republic is presented as a model for community-focused development.
