One Health Cases competition

The competition

To mark One Health Day 2022, we are pleased to announce the launch of a One Health Cases competition, rewarding the winning author teams for their outstanding contributions to the teaching of One Health. 

CABI One Health cases are real-life examples of One Health projects or research in action. Designed for students, teachers and practitioners, they cover important, contemporary topics and focus on practical approaches to solving problems, spanning animal health, human health, environmental health, plant sciences and sociological issues. They show the real impact of One Health in practice – both the successes and the challenges.

To be considered for competition entry, your case study must:
  • highlight the value added by taking a One Health approach as opposed to working in silos, such as improved health outcomes, financial savings or better ecosystem resilience
  • show how different stakeholders such as academics, communities and decision makers can help tackle problems together to find innovative solutions
  • summarise the lessons learned 

The Prize

CABI will award prizes to the authors of one case in each of two categories:
  • CABI One Health Cases Competition Winner
  • CABI One Health Cases New Researcher Competition Winner
Each author team will be awarded £500. Winning cases will also be published Open Access.

How to enter

Submission instructions
Prior to submission, please ensure you have carefully read the submission guidelines.

Your case should be submitted following the usual submissions process for One Health Cases. This includes completing a Title Page template and Main Case template, and submitting them both here.

You may fill out a Case Proposal form and submit it to [email protected] before writing if you wish to check that your case fits our scope.
Please not that this is not a requirement of entry. A submitted Case Proposal form does not constitute an entry to the competition.

Submission deadline: 31st January 2023
Cases submitted before this date will be considered eligible for the competition.

Case study winners: 8th May 2023
If your case is selected as a winner by the judging panel, you will be informed via email by this date.

Please note:

  • Eligible cases must be within the usual scope for publication in One Health Cases.
  • To be considered for the New Researcher category authors must be within 5 years of earning their latest qualification on 16th January 2023. Please note this on your title page when submitting.
  • All entries will be subject to peer review and must be accepted for publication following peer review in order to be considered.
  • Cases will be judged based on the quality of the research or project, interest, and their presentation as a case.
  • The final winners are at the discretion of the judging panel (below).
  • In line with the usual submissions process for One Health Cases, all other (non-prize winning) cases will be paid £100 when accepted through peer review (unless Open Access publishing is requested).
  • CABI One Health Editorial Board members are not eligible for the competition, and may not contribute to a nominated case.
Submission guidelines

The judges

All eligible cases will be reviewed by the judges to decide the final winners.

Esther Schelling

Esther Schelling is the Head of Innovations, Learning and Quality Assurance at Vétérinaires sans Frontières Suisse (VSF-Suisse). After more than 20 years of research on health of pastoralists, zoonoses and One Health approaches at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, she wanted to foster implementation of the lessons learned. She is co-editor of the textbook ‘One Health: The theory and practice of integrated health approaches’ (2015/2020), and keen to promote One Health approaches in education and practice. The added value of a closer cooperation between the health sectors is seen in the earlier recognition of health events, better control of zoonosis and more efficient surveillance and integrated health services - but should be shown more explicitly. A current project, OH4 HEAL, is led by VSF-Suisse and seeks to improve integrated health services for families, their livestock, and the environment they live in pastoral cross-border regions of Ethiopia, Kenya and Somali.

Maxine Whittaker

Maxine Whittaker is the Co-Director of the World Health Organisation's Collaborating Centre for Vector Borne Diseases and Neglected Tropical Diseases. In 2017 she was awarded the Royal Australasian College of Physicians International Medal in recognition of outstanding service in developing countries, and she has extensive experience in project and programme design in health and development, especially in infectious diseases, One Health, and sexual and reproductive health. She has a special interest in the issue of scaling-up pilot programmes into policy and practice, which combined with her co-editorship of the textbook ‘One Health: The theory and practice of integrated health approaches’ and previous role as Dean of the College of Public Health, Medical and Veterinary Sciences at James Cook University, means she has an enthusiastic drive to inspire One Health education and practice.
